앞에서 언급한 14개의 기본자음외에 5개의 쌍자음은 다음과 같다.<표3>

Except 14 basic consonants already mentioned above, the other 5 double consonants are shown in <Table 3>.

<표3>에서 보는 바와 같이 5개의 쌍자음의 명칭은 ㄱ(기역), ㄷ(디귿), ㅂ(비읍), ㅅ(시옷), ㅈ(지읒)앞에 ‘쌍’자를 붙이고, 그 발음은 단자음(ㄱㄷㅂㅅㅈ)보다 된소리다.

As shown in the <Table 3> above, these 5 double consonants are named by putting 쌍[ssang] right before each of the following consonants and these double consonants have rather a strong and hard sound than the single ones(ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅂ,ㅅ,ㅈ).

 

1) ㄱ[g] → ㄲ[kk]

    ㄷ[d] → ㄸ[tt]

    ㅂ[b] → ㅃ[pp]

   ㅅ[s] → ㅆ[ss]

    ㅈ[j] → ㅉ[jj]

 

2) 가[ga] → 까[kka]

    다[da] → 따[tta]

    바[ba] → 빠[ppa]

    사[sa] → 싸[ssa]

    자[ja] → 짜[jja]

 

발음을 영어단어의 알파벳글자발음과 견주어볼 수 있다.

The sounds of these consonants can be compared with those of some alphabetical letters in English words as follows.

 

ㄱ [g]: g in girl ㄲ[kk]: k in sky, or c in Scotland

ㄷ [d]: d in dog ㄸ[tt]: t in study

ㅂ [b]: b in boy ㅃ[pp]: p in speak

ㅅ [s]: s in smooth ㅆ[ss]: s in sorry or song

ㅈ [j]: j in June ㅉ[jj]: j in traffic jam
