기본모음의 쓰기 요령은 자음만큼 어렵지 않다. 두개의 직선(가로, 세로)이 조합된 것이라고 볼 수 있다.

Writing basic vowels is not so difficult as consonants. They can be regarded as combinations of two lines: a horizontal line (ㅡ) and a vertical line (ㅣ).

•발음요령

Tips for Pronunciation

 

<ㅑ ㅕ ㅛ ㅠ>를 발음할 때 각각 ‘ㅣ’를 먼저 짧게 강세 없이 발음하면서 ‘ㅏ’ ‘ㅓ’ ‘ㅗ’ ‘ㅜ’로 미끄러지듯 발음해 본다. 이와 같은 모음은 영어의 이중 모음과 달리 동시에 발음한다. 이 경우 ‘ㅣ’는 yard, yacht, York, you 단어의 y로 간주하는 것이 합리적일 것이다. 왜냐하면 y가 반모음으로 간주되어 뒤따르는 모음과 결합하여 동시 발음되기 때문이다. 따라서 모음 <ㅑㅕㅛㅠ>의 로마자 표기는 ‘이’를 가늘게 하는 y를 a, eo, o, u, 앞에 각각 붙이도록 하였다.

When pronouncing <ㅑㅕ ㅛ ㅠ>, pronounce <ㅣ> short and without accent, and then directly glide to ㅏ ㅓ ㅗ and ㅜ respectively. Unlike diphthongs in English, <ㅑㅕ ㅛ ㅠ> should be pronounced at the same time. In this case, it is reasonable to regard <ㅣ> as y in yard, yacht, York, and you, which are regarded as semivowels and comparatively pronounced at the same time combining the following vowel. Accordingly, when pronouncing <ㅑㅕㅛㅠ>, y is to be placed before a, eo, o, u, respectively as shown below:

<야 여 요 유> 와 <ㅑㅕㅛㅠ>의 발음은 같다. ㅇ은 모음과 결합할 때는 자음 구실을 갖지 않고 받침으로 쓰일 때만 영어단어 song의 ng 발음과 같다.  <기본자모음결합글자 140자> 참조

There is no difference in pronunciation between <야 여 요 유> and <ㅑㅕㅛㅠ> because ㅇ has no function of the consonant when it is combined with vowels but it has the same pronunciation of ng in song when it is used as 받침. Refer to 140 Consonant-vowel Combination.

 

모음 ‘ㅡ’는 영어에는 존재하지 않는 발음이다. 아래턱을 내리지 않고 입을 조금만 벌려 소리를 낸다. ‘ㅡ’의 발음은 dream의 d 또는 grand의 g의 지속음과 흡사하다. 왜냐하면 그 두 자음은 유성음이기 때문이다.

The vowel, 'ㅡ', which is pronounced 으 [eu], does not exist in English. You can pronounce it with your lips open just a little, not lowering your jaw. The pronunciation of 'ㅡ' is similar to the continuant sound of d in dream or g in grand because they are voiced sounds.
