음절체계 Syllabic System
• 한글은 한 글자 한 음절 체계를 갖는다. 여기서 ‘글자’란 ‘자모음결합글자’ 또는 ‘받침 있는 글자’를 말한다. 실제로 이 두 가지 형태의 글자가 사용된다. 영어는 자모음이 결합하면 바로 단어를 형성하는데 한글은 자모음이 결합하거나 자모음결합글자에 받침을 포함시키면 일단 글자를 형성한다.
Hangeul has a one-letter- one-syllable system. What is called 글자[geuljja](meaning the letter) refers to the consonant-vowel-combination letter(자모음결합글자) and the letter with 받침[batchim](받침 있는 글자). These two types of letters are practically used. In English, any type of combination of the consonant and the vowel is called 단어[daneo](meaning the word) but in Korean, a combination of a consonant and a vowel, or a combination of a consonant and a vowel including 받침 is formed 글자.
• 한 글자 한 음절 체계 One-letter-one-syllable system
자음+모음 Consonant + Vowel
ㄱ + ㅗ → 고[go] (자모음결합글자 a consonant-vowel combination letter)
자음+모음+자음 Consonant + Vowel + Consonant
ㅇ + ㅏ + ㄴ → 안[an] (받침 있는 글자 a letter with 받침)
영어단어 Christmas는 두개의 음절로 된 하나의 단어이지만, 한글로 옮겨 쓰면 ‘크리스마스’가 되어 다섯 개의 음절을 가진다. 즉, 다섯 개의 글자로 다섯 개의 음절을 갖는 하나의 단어가 된다.
The English word, Christmas is a two-syllable word, but if the word is transformed into Korean, it has five letters as in 크리스마스, which is dealt with a five-syllable word. That is, 크리스마스 is a five-letter five-syllable word.

단어 Words
한 글자 단어에서부터 넷 또는 그 이상의 글자로 된 단어까지 다양하다.
Words are various from one-letter words up to those with four or more letters.
• 한 글자 단어 one-letter words:
배 ship; belly; pear 눈 eye; snow 강 river 산 mountain
‘배’, ‘눈’, ‘다리’는 하나 이상의 의미를 갖는 단어들이다.
배, 눈, and 다리 belong to the words that have more than one meaning(polysemy).
• 두 글자 단어 two-letter words:
머리 head 모자 hat 이마 forehead 우유 milk 다리 leg; bridge
• 세 글자 단어 three-letter words:
다리미 (flat)iron 아버지 father 어머니 mother 며느리 daughter-in-law
시동생 brother-in-law
• 네 글자 단어 four-letter words:
시아버지 father-in-law 시어머니 mother-in-law
