The Number of the Consonant & Vowel Letters

 

 

• 기본이 되는 자음글자는 14, 모음글자는 10개인데, 이 기본자음과 기본모음으로 실제 사용되는 간단한 기본 자모음결합글자가 만들어진다. 자모음결합글자란 자음과 모음만으로 결합된 글자를 말한다.

There are basic 14 consonants and 10 vowels, and out of these consonant and vowel letters, a simple practical basic consonant-vowel combination letter is formed. A consonant-vowel combination letter is the one that is formed only by combining a consonant and a vowel.

• 여기에 쌍자음 5개와 기타의 모음 11글자가 추가된다. 따라서 자모음결합글자에 이용되는 자음글자는 19개, 모음글자는 21개로 전부 40개의 자모음글자다.

To these 24 basic consonants and vowels, 5 double consonants and the other 11vowels(called diphthongs) are added. Accordingly, the consonants and vowels that are used for forming a consonant-vowel combination letter are 19 consonants and 21 vowels; 40 letters in all.

• 마지막으로 받침으로 쓰이는 자음글자가 있다. 이것을 ‘받침글자’ 또는 줄여서 ‘받침’이라고 부르는데 이것은 위의 모음 혹은 자모음결합글자를 밑에서 받쳐준다는 데서 비롯된 것이다. 이로서 또한 받침이 포함되는 글자가 만들어지는데 이것을 ‘받침 있는 글자’라고 부르도록 한다.

Lastly, there are consonant letters that are used as 받침[batchim]. We call these letters 받침글자 or simply 받침[batchim] (meaning a support or a prop) because they seemingly support or prop the preceding (upper) vowel or a consonant-vowel combination letter. And again, a consonant-vowel combination letter that includes 받침 is formed, which we decide to call 받침 있는 글자( a letter with 받침[batchim]).
