Polite and Impolite Expressions

 

 

존댓말은 손위 사람에게 사용하고, 반말은 친한 친구사이나 손아래 사람에게 사용한다. 존댓말에는 격식적인 표현과 비 격식적인 표현이 있다. 본 교재는 존댓말에 중점을 둔다.

존댓말 is an honorific or polite expression showing respect for the person you are speaking to and 반말 is an impolite expression lacking in respect, which can be called crude language intended for your close friends or your juniors. There are formal and informal expressions in 존댓말(the polite form). This text centers mainly on 존댓말.

안녕하십니까? [An-nyeong-ha-sim-ni-kka] How are you?

안녕하세요? [An-nyeong-ha-se-yo] How are you?

고맙습니다. [go-map-seum-ni-da] Thank you.

고마워요. [go-ma-wo-yo] Thank you

안녕.[annyeong] Hi. / Bye. ※만났을 때 헤어질 때 When either meeting or parting .

고마워.[go-ma-wo] Thanks.

 

‘안녕하십니까?’와 ‘안녕하세요?’는 둘 다 존댓말이지만 전자는 격식적인 표현이고 후자는 비 격식적인 표현이다. ‘고맙습니다’와 ‘고마워요’도 마찬가지다. 그러나 윗사람에게는 ‘고마워요’보다 ‘고맙습니다’를 쓰는 것이 더 좋게 느껴진다. ‘안녕’은 주로 청소년들 사이에서 서로 만나거나 헤어질 때 쓴다. ‘고마워’는 ‘고맙습니다’와 같은 뜻이지만 반말에 해당한다.

 

Both 안녕하십니까? and 안녕하세요? are polite expressions but 안녕하십니까? is formal and 안녕하세요? is informal. So with the case of 고맙습니다 and 고마워요. However, to your seniors, 고맙습니다 sounds better than 고마워요. 안녕, which belongs to 반말 (an impolite expression), can be used mainly between youngsters when both meeting and departing. 고마워, which is the same in meaning with 고마워요(Thank you), is 반말(an impolite expression).

 

존댓말 격식 Polite formal : 안녕하십니까? 고맙습니다.

존댓말 비격식 Polite informal : 안녕하세요? 고마워요.

반말 Impolite: 안녕. 고마워
